Oschterputz

It's the alsatian word for spring cleaning, and what I plan on doing today. I really have to get my house back in control, I feel like I've been walking on the edge of a mountain for 1 1/2 month, and any little wind could make me fall down the disorganization hill: my kitchen is a mess, my office is just one huge pile of stuff with bills and tax papers buried in it, I haven't find time to scrap or do anything creative for waaaaay too long... I don't like living that way. Anyway, here's what I plan on doing today:
  • Laundry: put away anything clean DONE!, wash and hang up 2 loads DONE!, pick them up and put them away tonight if the weather is good enought to have them dry outside Too cold and rainy.
  • Kitchen: load DONE!, run DONE! and unload dishwasher DONE!, hand wash pots and pans DONE!, put away everything DONE!

Poor blog of mine

I really don't treat you well, forgetting about your existence when mine gets chaotic... And it has definitely been, recently! I first had a lot to do at work... and I mean A LOT! I work for my town and we celebrated the 65th anniversary of the town's Liberation, which meant a huge event to organize, mayor's speech to write, many people to coordinate, etc. It went well, thankfully, even if the rain... or rather storm... started right in the middle of the ceremony.

Since then I've been busy preparing our first IUI (intra-uterine insemination) that finally happened on Monday, March 29th. Can't wait to know if it worked... 15 more days to wait, the suspense is killing me already! I'm feeling ok, yet really tired and emotional. Don't know if it's because of work stress or because of the hormonal treatement, but I just feel like staying in bed all day, even if I can't sleep (woke up at 4:19 AM this morning... Ugh!!!)

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to take some days off, celebrate Easter with inlaws and then go to Switzerland to see my family and friends, especially my BFF's little daughter Ambre! Yay!!!

Positivity journal - 03.15

Today, I...
  • got my first shot for my TTC treatement, the IUI should be this weekend or rather on the beginning of next week. And it didn't hurt! And we'll be able to avoid getting the IUI on Sunday, when I have a huge professional event that I couldn't miss!! YAY!!
  • got confronted to a very very bad situation and had the right reaction, even if that kind of situation is always very complicated.
  • didn't lose my temper when 2 out of 6 people let me down 24 hours before a very important job, and found replacement people!

Positivity journal - 03.14

On Sunday I...
  • voted and felt really blessed for living in a democracy
  • had good hopes that "my side" will win the elections
  • managed not to slam my boss when he made a really mean and stupid comment about me
  • had a lovely dinner with DBF

Positivity journal - 03.09 to 03.13

Tuesday:
  • I finished the town magazine that I was working on for weeks, and I'm happy with the result! It was a hard work and I'm soooooooo glad it's done
Wednesday:
  • After a couple more flaws to correct, the town magazine is getting printed and out of my mind.
  • I finally worked decent hours again (like... not 12 of them!)
  • I watched a soccer game (something really rare for me) and the team we supported won!
Thursday:
  • I was able to organize my desk and it helps me feel productive again.
  • I got many little tasks done at work, you know that kind of tasks that you put aside when you have a big something in mind (like a town magazine of 36 pages) and then re-discover when the big task is over.
  • I'm having issues with someone at work, a collegue who is very arrogant and thinks she's everyone's boss, and I was able to talk about it with our actual boss. I didn't got emotional and drama-queen about it, I talked about facts, on a professional level, and this is a big thing for me!
Friday:
  • It's Friday!
  • I helped a friend from work (preparing the elections)
  • I got an unexpected phonecall at work, since my bosses were unavailable I had to manage it on my own and I got good feedback on my initiative from my bosses later on!
  • I got back to a clean home... I'm so lucky to be able to afford a cleaning lady!
Saturday:
  • I bought a great DVD that will help people in need: each DVD represents 18 meals, 1 million of them are sold each year.
  • I went grocery shopping with DBF and we resisted the junk food temptations
  • I re-discovered the greatest genius of French music of all time, Georges Brassens.

Positivity journal - 03.05 and 03.06

Friday:
  • 40 years ago, DBF was born. One of the greatest joy of my life started his journey...
  • To celebrate DBF's birthday, we went to eat with friends (she's a collegue of mine and he's DBF's godfather) and had a great time
  • I almost finished the magazine I'm working on and I feel more and more optimistic about being able to get it done on time
Saturday:
  • I had to work and it was an exhausting day, but I got a lot done. I love being productive!
  • DBF and I went grocery shopping together and we bought lots of good stuff. We've been starting to revamp our lifestyle for a more healthy living, and I was really proud of what we got during our shopping trip.
  • We spent the evening with DBF's family (still celebrating his b'day) and it was nice. I also had the surprise to meet friends in the restaurant, and I enjoyed seeing them and their adorable daughter, even just for a couple minutes.

Positivity Journal 03.04

Here are the good things I enjoyed today...
  • Despite his natural tendency to avoid making decisions, I managed to get answers from my boss and move forward in my work. I was able to negotiate with him and expose my point of view without getting arrogant (my main problem), to make him make a decision without looking like I was pushing him... Great balance, I'm proud of myself for having the right attitude.
  • I took a nap!
  • I cleaned up the kitchen.
  • I finished DBF's mini album for his birthday tomorrow.

Positivity journal - 03.03

It's only 7:30 AM, but I wanted to note my first good thing of the day because I was afraid I'd have forgotten tonight.
  • I got waken up by DBF snoring and talking in his sleep at 5:45, and since I'm so stressed because of work, I decided to get up already and go to work early. I was feeling tired and nervous, but when I was walking to the office I saw a moonset... like a sunset, but for the moon. The moon was going down, right above the river, with the sky all light blue and baby pink because of sunrise... It was gorgeous and it made me smile!
  • This afternoon I met an old man to prepare the 65th anniversary of the town's liberation. I expected the normal stories about life during WWII and instead I met a hero: this man was 16 or 17 years old and, with his dad, he helped escaped prisoners and jewish people to escape the nazis. He risked his and his family's life doing so, and he was totally aware of the risks. The best part was how humble he was: he insisted that we wouldn't publish his name when we write the story, he said "I just helped them out, it was normal, I wasn't doing it to get decorations"... Wow!
  • I worked a lot today, started at 7 AM, took just an hour lunch break and finishing at 6:30 PM. Anyway, it was a lot but at least I managed to feel more secure about the work I have to finish. I feel like I accomplished a lot and that is great! I'm knowing more precisely where I am and what I still need to do to finish this huge job, and it's not that bad after all! Good news!

Positivity Journal 03.02

Here are the good things for today:
  • I met a collegue's baby girl, she's 1 month old. I hold her in my arms for about 1 hour and she was just the sweetest baby. They lost their first daughter a couple years ago at 5 months of pregnancy, and it's making me feel really happy for them (even if we're not very close) to see this precious little baby. And I enjoy having a baby in my arms. Can't wait to have my own!
  • G and I went to see our endocrinologist and even though I found out G's health issues are more severe than what I thought, at least we are both motivated to do something about it. And his issues are not extremely bad either, we have still time to act and make things better! And I found out that I don't have PCOS after all!
  • I felt unsecure and shy about this positivity project, but I got a terrific response and support from my online friends and I feel happy about it! Thanks girls, luv ya!!

Positivity journal - 03.01

Okay, I wanna try something. I've noticed that I tend to be negative often, and that affects me in too many ways, making feel down, sad, bad. I want to try something for the month of march, and see if it boosts my happiness. It can't hurt anyway, so here's the deal: I'll try to journal every night and see the bright side of things. Finding the not so good part of an event is pretty easy, but it really hurts your spirit in the long term, so I'm ready to make the little extra step and find something positive even in the worst situations.

Let's start... Today, I
  • did the right thing (helping Aunt Berthe) even if it wasn't the most pleasant one,
  • met an old lady who was really gentle and soft, she made a strong impression on me
  • stopped twice before getting angry and mad (at myself or at others): the problems where not that bad that they deserved me to get stressed out and nervous. It was hard (I'm so quick at getting angry) but I succeeded! Go me!
Well, that's a pretty good start, isn't it? I'm not sure I'll have time to post on this blog every evening, but I'll try to journal positively one way or another... In French we say "no matter the bottle, as long as you get the wine", so "no matter where you journal as long as you can celebrate positive things"! (Actually, the real saying is more like "as long as you get drunk", but nevermind! LOL)

Have a good night everyone!

Yeepeee!

Surprise! I had to do something unplanned for work. Love it when I have to go to the office on a short notice on a saturday afternoon... NOT! Anyway, that used most of my Saturday afternoon, with DBF being sick in addition to that, I'm not sure how much I'll be able to accomplish!! We'll see...

ETA: OK, forget it, this was definitely a do-almost-nothing weekend. I'll rather list what I did accomplish than what I planned and didn't do and feel guilty for not doing! LOL

  • I planned next week's menus and went grocery shopping
  • I caught up on my RSS reader (no unread post) and on my favorite websites
  • I worked (pix to take and impromptu powerpoint to prepare)
  • I washed 1 load of laundry and hung it up
  • I cleaned the cat's litter
  • I enjoyed myself and relaxed!
  • I took a pic everyday
  • I edited about 1/2 of February's P365 pix
  • I got myself a manicure
  • I printed DBF's mini album
  • I created a card for a collegue's newborn baby
  • I took care of DBF and MIL who are sick
Well, not too bad after all... Now onto the busy week that is starting. Ugh, I'm tired just thinking about the work I have to do!

Wow!

I spent almost 2 hours talking on the phone with a WWII American veteran. It was an absolutely amazing experience. This man is 89 years old and he commanded a company that liberated the town I live in and work for. Unfortunately he got wounded in action a couple months before and was still in the hospital when his battallion fought in our town. But still, it was so touching to hear him speak of all that, and of his friends that actually were there and got wounded or captured in our city. We ended up both crying on the phone.

I feel so blessed and honored that those young men sacrificed so much to make us free. Yeah, I know, I wasn't born at that time, but without them I wouldn't be here, and neither would DBF, so even 65 years later, they have a huge impact. Bless you all.

Project 365 and weekend to do list

Well, I'm really proud to announce that I've been doing pretty good on taking the pix, even though my recent illness screwed up my posting of them! I'll try to update this weekend, which leads me to my second topic for this post: my to do list for the weekend. With being sick and soooo tired for most of the week, I haven't accomplished anything. Even though I obviously needed the rest, I'm feeling better and all this "lost time" is getting on my nerve (it's actually a sign I'm feeling better! LOL) so here is what I will do this weekend:
  • catch up on P365 editing and posting DONE!
  • plan menus for the week DONE!
  • write down shopping list DONE! and go grocery shopping DONE!
  • while in shop, print February goals' plan the shop's printer was broken
  • take 1 load of laundry out and hang it off to dry DONE!
  • finish ironing clothes
  • 2x15 minutes on PPW/office to do's DONE!

1/10th of the year is gone...

I juste realised this today: 1 / 10th of 2010 is past already. Wow, that's quite a shocking, stressful thought. Actually, that's stressful because I haven't the feeling to have accomplished much during those 36 first days of the year. I'm constatly amazed by how fast the time flies!

I'm ill...

I caught a really nasty cold last weekend and I'm stuck home since Tuesday. I went to work on Monday but I was completely useless: tired, coughing, running nose... Yuck!!! Anyway, I'm resting and trying to get better ASAP: I've got too much work to be able to afford staying home that long. I've worked from home, writing articles, giving phonecalls and stuff, but still, I'm not as efficient as I'd be at the office. Ugh, I hate that!

Where to start?

Marcia François, a terrific organizing coach (and sweet person as well!) posted today about where to start when you feel overwhelmed. I totally agree with her answer:

I say start with the room that bothers you the most.

That's always how I decide where to start when I'm in that position. The natural tendency would be to start with the easiest thing, but the most effective is to start small but on something that makes you nuts.

I guess that's why I usually start with my bedroom, even if the rest of the house is in a worst state. My bedroom is my nest, it should be peaceful and protective and not create more stress. I don't really care if I have to wait one (or several) day(s) to see my kitchen counter surface again, as long as I can get to sleep and feel comfortable there. Actually, having this bubble of serenity in my messy house is like breathing, it makes me feel ready to "attack" the rest of the house. It's different for each person, but you always have to "scratch where it itches"!

Have a look at Marcia's blog and website, they are both full of terrific tips!!

A (light) to do list for the weekend

Okay, I know I've just written that I wanted to take it easy this weekend, but I still have some things to do. Luckily I got rid of some important stuff on the beginning of the week, so that's things I won't have to worry about. The other "important" items will get done this week, and the rest can wait.

Here's what I want to do over these two days:
  • menu planning and grocery shopping (incl. putting away everything) DONE!
  • put away dry laundry (incl. the ironed clothes) DONE! and wash 2 loads of laundry DONE!
  • clean microwave
  • unload dishwasher DONE!
  • select the pix that I will take to the crop next week in progress
  • 15 minutes on e-mails + normal maintenance DONE!
  • 15 minutes on zips + normal maintenance DONE!
  • 15 minutes on RSS + normal maintenance DONE!
  • 15 minutes on PPW (other than health-related)
  • 15 minutes on health PPW
  • pick up the top of the dresser in bedroom DONE!
  • relax, create, have fun, sleep! (that's my fave part, I'm 99.9% sure I won't procrastinate that one! LOL)
Eeeeek, I almost forgot: finish secret project and send it to Lydie for review. DONE!

Okay, that was a crappy week!

I got sick on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, got back to work on Thursday and felt bad again on Friday. My head was spinning for 2 hours and then I felt soooooo weak... awful. I felt like being drunk and tired after a party, without the pary! Definitely not fun! Anyway, that week is over and hopefully I'm done with the sickies for a couple months, I've had enough!! I will take it easy this weekend but I hope I'll be back on track full force next week.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Here's what I planned for the week, and here's all the tasks that I didn't do on planned day:
Monday:
  • call for clothes that don't fit DONE on Tuesday or Wednesday
Tuesday:
  • 15 minutes on PPW
  • laundry: put away dry laundry, wash 1 load and hang it up
Wednesday:
  • 15 minutes filing
  • clean microwave
And finally, here's what I planned for today (thursday)
  • 15 minutes indoor bike before work Still sick, I chose to sleep a bit longer instead!
  • POTD DONE!
  • BPOTD DONE!
  • work DONE!
  • clean oven
Sooooo, let's recap what I still have to do tomorrow... errrr, no, this weekend:
  • 15 minutes on PPW
  • laundry: put away dry laundry, wash 1 load and hang it up
  • 15 minutes filing
  • clean microwave
  • clean oven
Yuck, the bug really screwed my planning for this week! And since we have to take care of DBF's uncle tomorrow (MIL is gone for to day, so we gotta do it instead of her, make sure he takes his meds, have lunch with him, etc.) this won't help me get back on track. Oh, and we plan on going out tomorrow night... Well, hopefully my weekend will be productive so that I can catch up!

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

My lazy wednesday...

Still sick today, got the doc visiting me this morning: it's nothing serious, just something bad that I ate. I'm feeling better each hour, and hopefully I'll be back to my normal self tomorrow! I took lots of naps but I'm still wanting to get a good night sleep before going back to work, so off I go! 'night!!

Yummy!

Two friends and their 2 years old daughter will come tonight for a board game party. They bring the games and the cute little girl, and I bring the food! LOL I want this to be really casual and relaxed, so I'll only make finger foods: ham/pastry rolls, shrimp butter blinis, stuffed mushrooms (with various sorts of cheese), olives, chips, salami, and as dessert we'll eat "kings' pie". It's a pastry pie with almond paste in the center, and it's eaten around January 6th, to celebrate the kings coming to see Jesus, following the star. There's a little charm hidden in it and the person who gets the charm is declared king or queen for the day. I'll try to take a pic tonight, it'll be clearer than my explanations! LOL As you guess, I'm really looking forward!

I met the sweetest old lady

I work for our town, and I'm in charge of all the public and press relation. One part of my job is to write articles that we send to the newspapers, especially about the "great birthdays", as we call them... In proper english, when people celebrate a really old birthday. ;) Anyway, this part of my job is pretty cool, even though the old people I meet are basically all the same and don't have had extravagant lives. Except today: I met a cute little old lady who celebrated her 90th birthday at the end of December.

When she was 15 she moved to Paris and was there when the town was liberated during WWII. Then she went to New York as a nanny for a french family and met an American guy there. She married him, lived in New York for 35 years, then in Pittsburgh for 20 years after they retired. When he passed away, she came back in France to be closer to her family, brother, niece and nephews. She was just the cutest because she was talking really fast (and a lot! LOL), mixing french and english, with a great sense of humour, smart and sweet... I don't know how to express how I felt, but she was like sparkling, like a little firework, joyful and bright. I really loved meeting her!

Friday check up... how am I doing?

My weekly plan is here. Let's see how I'm doing today:
  • POTD DONE!
  • BPOTD DONE!
  • work DONE!

Thursday's check up... how am I doing?

Here's my weekly plan, and that's my to do for today:
  • POTD DONE!
  • BPOTD DONE!
  • AM doc appt DONE!
  • work PM DONE!
  • 2x15 minutes on downstairs' fridge
  • buy bread for dinner DONE!
Plus what's left from yesterday's list:
  • 2x15 minutes on laundry room
  • 15 minutes on filing
Well, I think I'll postpone all the chores on this weekend since we have another doc appt tomorrow. Tonight I built the new indoor bike we got. Now I'm ready to get back to working out! Woohoooooo!

Doc appt

So, we just came back from our doc appt. We're TTC since August 2008 and we've discover we both have issues. Long story short, we won't have babies naturally (except for a miracle), so we've started a medical procedure. It was long (about 6 months), sometimes painful, stressful, nerveracking, but it's coming to an end, and a fairly happy end! Today was our last appointement before we start our first AI cycle. No, not "artificial intelligence"... "Artificial insemination"!! LOL We met the biologist that explained us once again what will happen exactly, we got the chance to ask the 132'654'795'198'474 questions we had (especially me!) and we set up a date to start the procedure!

At first we wanted to start in February, but this first cycle of procedure would happen exactly when I have a HUGE professional even to organize. Considering that stress and TTC don't work well together, the doc told us that it was better to postpone. We've been waiting for almost 2 years, we can wait 1 month more, can't we? So, we decided to start the first cycle in March. I cannot wait, as you can imagine!

Why I feel lucky

On Monday I got back to work. I was feeling really happy, optimistic, energize, enthusiastic. I know, it might be weird for a first day of work after Christmas break, but I just was. Everyone was surprised to see me in such a good mood, even though I'm not the grumpy kind usually, and I explained to them that I feel lucky: I have a family, a boyfriend and wonderful friends that I love dearly, I have a house that I can make into a home, I have a job that I don't hate too much most days, I'm fairly healthy... Why on earth would I be grumpy?? It was fun to see how telling all that made people happier and smiling more, though!!

Okay, that was my moment of zen, you can now go back to your normal life! LOL

Wednesday check up... how am I doing?

Here's my weekly plan, and that's my to do for today:
  • 15 minutes on health PPW (from yesterday's list) DONE!

Tuesday check up... how am I doing?

Here's my weekly plan, and that's my to do for today:
  • POTD DONE!
  • BPOTD (blog post of the day) Hehehe, at least I got one with this one! LOL
  • work DONE!
  • 15 minutes on health PPW
  • 15 minutes on laundry room
After all, today was a not-much-done day. I met a friend when I got out of work and we decided to have a drink and impromptu chat. Our personal new year celebration! LOL I had a great time catching up on our lives, playing with her a-do-ra-ble daughter and enjoying our time together. It's good to have a plan and a to do list, but sometimes you have to remember to live too! Anyway, I'm glad I didn't manage to do all I had planned for a good cause. I still got one load of laundry done, so that's good too, and I still have many "serious" days coming to make all the not-so-fun stuff!

Hope you enjoyed your day too!!

Got the cutest love note EVAH!!!

This is what I saw when I got out of the house this morning... "Love U - smooches" written in the snow. Awwwwwww!

I was running late but I HAD to go back and take a quick pic! Hey, I'm a scrapbooker after all! LOL

Monday check up... how am I doing?

  • 15 minutes on home office
  • send b'day card to Camille

Project 365

Yep, despite getting about 130 pix out of 365 last year, I'm back at it again this year! Hopefully I'll do better and, more important, enjoy the process! I don't want to take pix because I "have" to, I want to take them because I love to and because I want to remember those moments.

I'm not naive, though, I know there'll be days when I'll fail or be clueless about what pic I could take. That's why I've already bookmarked some useful pages or blog posts, like this one, this one or this one @ SSD. Still need to set up a plan, but I guess I'll get to it when I get stuck, as usual! Who said "procrastinator"?? LOL

My first pix are posted in the slideshow on the right.

New year, new resolutions

As almost everyone, a new year makes me feel hopeful and ready for change. As almost everyone again, my motivation doesn't last very long and (logically) my resolutions sometimes stay wishes and don't get real!

In 2009, I wanted to
  • Thighten my relationship with the ones I love and develop my "internal life" (creativity, personal interests, culture). I will consider this a success: I took care of my loved ones, said "I love you" to many of them for the first time, sent b'day cards and little gifts for b'days as a way to say "I'm thinking of you", I started hybrid crafting and developped new skills.
  • Get to a healthy BMI, that is below 72 kg (158 lbs). Definitely not a success, but thanks to the horrible weight gain, I discovered my medical condition and got "armed" to improve my health in 2010 (new doctor, amongst other things!)
  • Decide where I want my career to move forward and take at least 2 steps in that direction. I'd say a half success: I managed to learn what I DON'T want to do and that's already a big step. I also learned to take my distance and balance my personal and professionnal lives, which is a huge improvement too. Finally, I took one exam that might help me move forward if I passed it!
  • Get educated about finance managing, define a budget, stick to it and adapt it to big changes in my life. Success, even though I didn't define a budget until the end of the year. 2010 will be a test year to practice my new skills! LOL
  • Create order, beauty and peace in my home and be able to maintain neatness without too much effort Half success again: even though my house never was (and never will be) picture perfect, it's getting easier and easier to maintain a liveable space and the right amount of organisation.
Well, after all it's not that bad!! LOL Despite some hard times (especially when we discovered we couldn't have babies on our own... tough moment!), 2009 was a good year and I'm really looking forward to 2010.

The word/theme I picked for 2010 is PEACE, and here are my "resolutions":
  • Personnal: grow, wise, serenity
  • Health: feel good, feel comfortable and at peace with my body, feel healthy
  • Job: peaceful relationships, distance (it's just a job!!), evolve and grow.
  • Money: manage it better so that I feel "secure"
  • Organisation: have a home, not just a house, and create a peaceful nest for our family
As every professional organizer will explain, resolutions that are just wishes will never become reality, that's why it's much useful to turn them into goals, which should always me SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant (to my larger goals) and Time-framed.

I will hence create monthly goals (or plans) to achieve those resolutions, and hopefully create the peace I'm craving for.

Here are my goals for January:

I'll post regularly to let you know how I'm doing!

What are your resolutions/goals/theme for 2010?

Avatar, here we come!

I just discovered that our favorite theater has Avatar in 3D! I was certain they didn't have the 3D! Good thing I checked, uh? We were planning on going there tomorrow but I can't stay awake until midnight when I'm working on the next morning, so I'll ask DBF if he wants to see it this afternoon.

ETA: we'll see it Friday evening, since I don't work on Saturday!

Have you seen it? Was it in 3D? Did you like it?

On another note, I just ordered an indoor bike... hopefully we'll finally get healthy this year. That's a first step already!
